Subject - Novice Programme

Start Date 8 October 2011

Dear Novice Parents,

Lessons will begin this Sat., Oct. 8th at Ocean View.  The instructors are Judithanne Astwood and Quinton Sherlock.  Juniors have been assigned a time slot (see here).  They should report at the appointed time to the driving range.  No weekly signups are required, simply show up each week when your schedule allows.  Loaner clubs will be provided if you need them.

Contact Quinton Sherlock by email or by phone (332-0361) if the weekly time slot assigned does not fit your general schedule.  If you cannot make a given Saturday session, DO NOT show up at another class time without prior approval.

As always, if you have any general enquiries about your membership in the BJGA, please direct them to info@juniorgolf.bm and monitor the website www.juniorgolf.bm. for general information.

We look forward to a great season of golfing.

Kind Regards,

Board of Directors,

Intermediate division

Subject - Intermediate Programme

Start Date 15 October 2011

Dear Intermediate Parents,

The BJGA is excited to announce that the Intermediate Programme of the BJGA will be hosted and run this year by the Fairmont Southampton and Riddell's Bay Golf and Country Club. The Programme will be led by Anthony Mocklow (Director of Golf at Fairmont and Riddell's Bay) and Chris Grantier (First Assistant Golf Professional at Riddell's Bay), both of whom are very excited to be a part of Junior Golf in Bermuda. The BJGA is grateful to Anthony and Chris for coming forward to take over this programme following Eardley Jones' departure to manage his son's fledgling professional golf career in Europe. Anthony and Chris will be taking the programme that Mr. Jones had developed and enhancing it with further structured instruction and a commitment to making the game of golf fun and exciting for the juniors. Anthony and Chris's enthusiasm for the game of golf and the development of junior golfers is clear and the BJGA is confident that the Intermediate Programme in 2011-12 will be a huge success.

Whilst we are disappointed to push back the start date of the Intermediate Programme to Saturday, 15 October, 2011, we feel that doing so permits Chris and Anthony the time to roll out an effective programme. The location (either Fairmont or Riddell's Bay) is still to be determined for the first session, however, we can confirm that the Intermediate Sessions will begin at 3:00pm each week.

Anthony and Chris have been provided with all of your contact details and from this point forward will be your point of contact for the day to day operation of the Intermediate Programme. One of them will be in contact with the group shortly with a further introduction and contact details. As always, if you have any general enquiries about your membership in the BJGA, please direct them to info@juniorgolf.bm and information on the programme will be posted on the website www.juniorgolf.bm.

Many thanks for your patience during this process and we look forward to a great season of golfing.

Kind Regards,

Board of Directors,

BJGA

Peter Nisbett Tournament Fundraiser

Eardley and I are trying to run a golf tournament this weekend, Saturday Aug 21st 8pm shot gun at Belmont, to fund raise for Patrick Nisbett, who is Bermuda’s only qualified Olympic equestrian.  He is going to compete in the World Equestrian Games in October in Vermont, but because he trains in Germany he has to ship his horse to the US which is very expensive.  The BEF is trying to raise $20,000 to assist him.

I know many of you have helped me before in various ways which gives me the courage to ask you again!

I attach the application form; please get your friends or fellow workers together, you can enter as a team or as an individual.  You will see that the price was $175, I am willing to accept $125 per person as I want this event to go ahead.  If you are a junior player and are available to play we have some spots that have been sponsored for you, please let me know if you are available.

We have an I-Pad as one of the prizes and there will be gift vouchers for top 3 teams and usual longest drive, closest to the pin (men and women).

Please support us and come out and enjoy some golf for a good cause.

Thanks again

Jean Wolosiuk

Community Day at Ocean View - January 30th

The BJGA is planning a "Community Family Day" at Ocean View on Saturday, January 30th.  This is another initiative for us as an organization to give-back and to share with others what the BJGA has to offer.
Flyers and promotions will be out to invite families unfamiliar with golf and the BJGA to come to Ocean View for some fun and information about our program.  There will be a putting/chipping contest around the putting green area and ball striking using SNAG equipment and tennis balls at the driving range.  Prizes will be available for random ticket draws and as contest awards.
To that end we need your help.  In order for the day to be a success we will require both adult and junior volunteers.  Golf knowledge is NOT REQUIRED.  BJGA program organizers will be there to organize your duties such as registration, monitoring an event, wearing velcro "target" suits, and collecting balls. Below you will find an outline of the volunteers needed.  Please send an e-mail to Carole Gilbertson at
cgilbert@logic.bm to sign-up.  Please indicate two potential times you and your junior golfer are able to assist.  You will be notified as to which of your choices you have been allocated.

set-up    9:30 - 11:00

Merit Testing and Red Tee 9-hole group formation

Merit testing program

The Board has decided to re-introduce Merit Testing to the BJGA Programme beginning in January 2010. The purpose of Merit Testing is twofold:

1. It helps our playing members hone the basic golfing skills and encourages good practice habits; and

2. It provides the Board with an objective criteria on which to base promotions and overseas selection.

This programme will be based largely on the programme that the BJGA had in place many years ago, assessing the Juniors in putting, chipping, pitching, ball striking and accuracy and, perhaps most importantly, their knowledge of etiquette and the Rules of Golf.

There will be 4 Merit Badges to achieve - Red, White, Blue and Gold.  All Juniors will start with the Red Badge, regardless of their TP status. Once the Merit Testing Programme is in full swing, the Board has decided that in order to progress into the next TP Group, Juniors must have achieved the corresponding Merit Badge. For example, in order to secure promotion to the Red TP group, it will be necessary for an Intermediate to have passed their Red Merit Badge.

The Board are committed to making this programme successful and fun for the Juniors and we will be rolling it out over the coming months.

The following link is the presentation given on Sat., Jan. 9th in the Ocean View clubhouse.

Red tee 9-hole group

The red tee group from last quarter 2009 has been split into the two groups (18-hole) and (9-hole) based upon the junior's experience and skill level.
The Handicaps page reflects the new split.

There were several reasons the Board chose to do this.

1.  The Board has observed that the transition from the Intermediate division directly into the TP Red tee group playing 18-holes every week was too drastic. The 9-hole group is now the entry point for all new TP players.  The group will have relaxed rules governing parent assistance, max strokes per hole, no monthly medal format, and less physical demands of walking the entire course.

2.  The realities of teetimes during the winter months are that the red tee groups very often do not get to finish due to darkness.  They are the last group to go off and many times do not start before 2:00.  Playing 9-holes will allow the entire group to finish most Saturdays and have competitive rounds.

3.  The 9-hole group will receive the primary focus for merit testing.  The plan is to have an approx 1 hour session prior to the start of 9-hole teetimes.  Chris, Quinton, and Jarryd will manage this program.  The initial objective is to get everyone through the Red badge skill level.

4.  Opportunities to move from the 9-hole to 18-hole are open.  The Board hasn't discussed this in detail yet but players will be promoted as the merit testing sponsors and 9-hole scoring warrants.

Ryan Roberts wins Riddell's Bay Club Championship

In a 36 Hole Final of the Riddell's Bay Club Championship 15 year old Ryan Roberts defeated Max Atherden 7 & 6.

In the morning round of 18 holes Roberts found himself 4 down after 7 holes but fought back to tie the match on 14 then won 4 straight holes to have  4 up lead going into the afternoon round.  Atherden started the second round winning the first hole and narrowly missed out on the second hole when Roberts made a clutch putt to half the hole. Both players struggled with their putting at times but Roberts went 7 up on 11 when Atherden's par putt lipped out.
Roberts won on the 12th hole when Atherden just missed a birdie putt which would have extended the match.
